I love it, but the game is less than popular due to its high encounter rate. I made a thread on Persona 2 Innocent Sin, but it's technically only available in English on PSP, in terms of physical releases. Cutscenes in Xenogears often make impressive use of the PS1's capabilities. There's a quality to this title (and the subsequent Xenosaga series) that is unlike anything released since the PS2 era. The game does a good job of making them seem like realistic human beings, although this isn't true for every character in the game. Xenogears - This is probably the best writing you'll see in a JRPG, with two particularly well written leads. Parasite Eve is a blockbuster movie in the form of what was a fairly unique Action RPG at the time, but you might not find that the FMV holds up. The sense of adventure in Grandia is unparalleled. The battle system is probably the best iteration of FF's ATB. Grandia is similar, but I think it does it a little better than Breath of Fire. Very competent classic JRPGs in the 2D on 3D style popular in the era. Brave Fencer Musashi (actually open to replaying this as I never finished it)īreath of Fire III and IV are charming, but they're not mind blowing. Chrono Trigger (it's technically available on the PS1) I'm open to JRPG, ARPG, SRPG, etc but I have a strong preference for games in the Japanese style of the time. I can appreciate it for what it is and can even see things it does better than some modern games but a bulk of how good the game was is down to the technological spectacle it had at the time. However, if it's charming enough I could overlook it I just recently finished Lunar 2 despite its modern flaws.īut OP Why not Final Fantasy? I've tried to finish FF7 again fairly recently and it. I would greatly prefer a game that holds up well today. On that note the PS1 (and PS2) are the definitive systems for the best and widest availability of RPG goodness IMO as well. Now while some people have different definitions of an old school RPG I cut my RPG teeth on the PS1 with the Lunar games so as far as I'm concerned the PS1 is the "old school RPG" system. I'm playing through Octopath Traveler and I can see the end on the horizon and while I'm loving the game it has left me with an intense nostalgic desire for old school RPG's.
